The CPTCLA is the oldest legal association dedicated to practitioners of Intellectual Property law in North and South Carolina. CPTCLA hosts an annual Spring CLE seminar in North Carolina, as well as a Fall seminar in South Carolina, offering a combined nine to twelve hours of CLE credit.  Our Spring CLE is being planned for May 2012 in the Charlotte, NC Arena for 7.25 hours of CLE credit.  We will have a great line-up of speakers. Our Fall 2011 Meeting is scheduled for September 23-24, 2011 at the Wild Dunes Resort, Isle of Palms, S.C. We look forward to the following exciting speakers and presentations:

Thomas L. Irving of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP will present "Patents: The Year in Review." Tom is always entertaining and the courts have given Tom plenty to talk about this year!

Prof. Harold C. (Hal) Wegner of Foley & Lardner, LLP will present "The New Substantive Patent Law of Leahy Smith America Invents Act: A Discussion of Substantive Patentability Requirements Under the New Law." Prof. Wegner, the former director of the Intellectual Property Law Program at the George Washington University Law School, weighs in and provides his views on the coming new Patent Law.

Demian Barbas of Norton Rose, OR, LLP will present "Similarities and Differences Between U.S. and Canadian Patent Practice: How to effectively Prosecute Patents in Canada."

Maury M. Tepper III of Tepper & Eyster, PLLC and current chair of the Trademark Public Advisory Committee to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office will present "Coming Changes in Trademark Prosecution: An Update on Trademark Practice Before the U.S.P.T.O."

Prof. Timothy R. Holbrook of Emory University and former clerk for the Honorable Glenn L. Archer Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will present "The Supreme Court's Shocking, Continuing Interest in IP."

Michael S. Connor of Alston & Bird, LLP will present "What is Patentable Subject Matter?: The Impact of Bilski, the Suspected Impact of Prometheus, and Their Effects on Your Patent Practice."

Dean Adrienne Meddock of North Carolina Central University School of Law, who established the U.S.P.T.O. Pilot Trademark Law Clinic at N.C.C.U., will present "The Hot Mess of Hot News: What's Left of State Protection after Copyright Pre-Emption in the Cyber Age."
